The Vibrant Health Advocates Aberdeen team outside a community building

About Us

A Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation rooted in Aberdeen and the Grampian region.

Reducing health inequalities, one person at a time

Vibrant Health Advocates Aberdeen Branch is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation working to reduce health inequalities across Aberdeen City and the wider Grampian region. We believe every person — regardless of income, literacy level, cultural background, or mental health status — deserves equitable access to good healthcare and the confidence to engage with it on their own terms.

Our branch was established in response to clear evidence that many Aberdeen residents were falling through the gaps: missing appointments because they did not understand letters from NHS Grampian, accepting inadequate treatment plans because they did not know they could ask questions, or simply giving up on services that felt designed for someone else. We set about changing that, one person at a time, through trained health advocates who combine professional knowledge with deep local rootedness.

Today our work spans individual casework, group health literacy workshops, liaison with NHS Grampian and Aberdeen City Health and Social Care Partnership, and community outreach in the wards where deprivation and poor health outcomes cluster most heavily. We are small enough to know our clients by name and experienced enough to achieve results that genuinely change lives. Everything we do is guided by the principles of person-centred advocacy: non-instructed where necessary, independent always, and grounded in the lived reality of Aberdeen's communities.

How we began — and why we have never looked back

Vibrant Health Advocates Aberdeen Branch grew out of conversations that happened long before the charity was formally constituted. A group of community health workers, NHS volunteers, and residents from Torry and Northfield had been noticing the same pattern for years: people who most needed healthcare were the least equipped to access it effectively. A grandmother in her seventies who could not read the referral letter. A young man with anxiety who cancelled every appointment because he feared what a doctor might say. A family from overseas whose GP consultations were shaped entirely by what the clinician assumed rather than what the patient could communicate. These were not rare exceptions — they were the everyday texture of health inequality in Aberdeen.

In response, a founding group drew on the national Vibrant Health Advocates framework and adapted it for the particular character of this city: its pockets of deep deprivation sitting alongside significant affluence, its transient oil-industry workforce, its substantial and growing communities of people born outside Scotland, and its geography — a city that is also a gateway to rural Aberdeenshire, where isolation compounds every health challenge.

We became a SCIO because we wanted legal accountability, transparent governance, and the ability to attract the funding our community deserved. What started as a handful of volunteers meeting in a church hall in Torry is now a recognised and trusted partner across Aberdeen's health and social care landscape.

Why we exist

Vibrant Health Advocates Aberdeen Branch exists to ensure that every person in Aberdeen and Grampian can access, understand, and meaningfully participate in the healthcare they need.

We provide independent, person-centred health advocacy to individuals who face barriers — whether those barriers are linguistic, cognitive, emotional, or structural — and we work systemically to challenge the inequalities that create those barriers in the first place.

Our mission is not simply to help individuals navigate a difficult system; it is to hold that system accountable to the people it serves, and to build, year by year, a Grampian where good health is genuinely within everyone's reach.

Governed well, rooted locally

Vibrant Health Advocates Aberdeen Branch is governed by a board of trustees who bring together expertise in healthcare, social work, community development, law, and finance — all with deep ties to Aberdeen and a personal commitment to health equity.

Day-to-day work is carried out by our small staff team and a growing body of trained volunteer advocates, supervised and supported to the highest professional standards. We are proud of the continuity in our team: the faces our clients see today are largely the same faces who were here when we opened our doors.
